If you are looking to gift someone (or yourself) their first telescope there are many great options for to start enjoying the night sky. We have put together a quick overview to help narrow down the options and listed some of our favorite beginner scopes for any budget.
The Celestron StarSense Explorer range of telescopes offer a great entry point into the hobby. They use a smartphone enabled application that helps you align your telescope and find a vast array of objects to look at. Starting at $299 they offer a lot of value as an entry into the hobby.
If you are looking for something that is motorized, with the ability to locate and track objects in the night sky, we have a few recommendations. The Sky-Watcher Virtuoso Tabletop Newtonian telescopes offer full go-to functionality and great portability. This is one of the lowest cost entry points to a motorized, go-to mount. Stepping up from there we highly recommend the Celestron Nexstar and Evolution ranges of telescopes. These telescopes offer a higher end astronomical experience and are great for planetary and lunar viewing.
If you are looking for something super compact, portable, and highly functional, look no further than the ZWO Seestar S50. This mighty little Smart Scope is fully controlled with a smartphone or tablet via the included application. It will automatically align itself to the night sky and find objects using the integrated database. The Seestar S50 then proceeds to capture images of the target you are viewing and displays the results to you in stunning detail on your smartphone or tablet. Please note that this is a self contained unit and does not allow the ability to view visually through an eyepiece.
