Telescopes Canada Endorses Stars Without Borders

At Telescopes Canada, our mission has always been clear: to expand access to the wonders of astronomy and spark curiosity about the universe in communities across the country. Today, we are proud to endorse Stars Without Borders an inspiring initiative led by EmpowerHer Diversity Hub under the direction of Project Lead Maria “Esel” Panlaqui.

This groundbreaking program is designed to engage underrepresented youth across Ontario—ages 10 to 18—through an innovative blend of Western astronomy, Indigenous knowledge, multicultural storytelling, and hands-on science learning.

Why Stars Without Borders Matters

Telescopes Canada recognizes the immense value of this program in transforming access to STEM opportunities. Stars Without Borders is not only about stargazing—it’s about building inclusive pathways to learning that reflect the cultural richness of our province.

The initiative stands out by:

• Expanding Access: Opening doors for racialized, newcomer, rural, Indigenous, and low-income youth to experience astronomy in ways that connect to their identities and communities.

• Sparking Partnerships: Building sustainable bridges between community organizations, observatories, and STEM leaders to ensure lasting impact.

• Honoring Indigenous Knowledge: Integrating Elders and knowledge keepers into program delivery so cultural teachings are upheld alongside Western science.

• Empowering Youth: Creating practical avenues for young people to access equipment, mentorship, and real-world STEM experiences.
